Course Information
Description Prevention and care of athletic injuries with emphasis on qualities of a good athletic trainer, avoiding accidents and injuries, recognizing signs and symptoms of specific sports injuries and conditions, immediate and long-term care of injuries, and administration procedures in athletic training.
Required Textbooks Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer.

Arnheims Principle of Athletic Training, Sixteenth Edition; William E. Prentice (NOT required)

Learning Outcomes Understand the role of the athletic trainer as a health care provider Identify principles of physical conditioning Apply proper taping techniques Understand the concept of rehabilitation Define and utilize universal precautions when dealing with wounds Understand the basic components of an off-the-field examination (SOAP) Explain the basic principles and concepts of ergonomics and their relationship to the prevention of illness and injury
Core Objectives * Communication Skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication. * Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions. * Empirical and Quantitative Skills: Students will demonstrate applications of scientific and mathematical concepts.

Major Assignments Schedule Literature Review: Reading peer-revied literature is important as a healthcare professional, as you are expected to keep up-to-date with new research and incorporate it into your practice. Directions: For this assignment, select one article that will be provided to you on Blackboard and answer the questions. More details will be announced in class. Due date: May 2nd, 2023

Course Policies
Instructor Policies Make-ups for quizzes, exams, assignments, and skills testing are permitted ONLY when the instructor is notified prior to the activity.
Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Students with more than 2 absences from the course with no communication with the instructor will receive the deduction from the participation grades.
Students must provide a proof of the valid reason of absence/ late show ups to avoid the points deduction.
2 late show ups are counted as an absence.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been exposed to COVID 19 or diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition on the COVID 19 Notification Form (available via a link on the Student Code of Conduct COVID19 webpage). Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
